IMLB 2022 Diversity and Inclusion Statement of Intent
The IMLB 2022 goal is to create an inclusive, respectful meeting environment that invites participation from people of all gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, disability, religion or age.
Objectives
- To treat all participants with dignity and respect

- To identify and partner with supporters and suppliers that promote and improve inclusion and diversity
- To achieve equal representation of males and females at both the committee level, and as chair/s of current and future committees, with representation from students, early career researchers, as well as senior academics.
- To achieve equal representation of males and females as invited speakers and session chairs at IMLB 2022

Dr Adam Best received his PhD from Monash University, Australia in 2002 before completing a post-doctoral Fellowship at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. Currently, Dr Best is a Principal Research Scientist with the Metal Industries Program of CSIRO Manufacturing. Adam was Co-Chair of the International Battery Association (IBA) meeting held in Brisbane, Australia, in 2014. He has 81 publications and 14 patents, with an h-index of 30 and over 4500-lifetime citations. In 2017, Dr Best was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellowship to study battery electrolytes and how to develop a battery industry in Australia. Adam leads several battery research programs developing novel electrolytes and battery concepts including for next-generation Lithium batteries with a range of Australian and International Companies. Due to Australia’s mineral wealth, Adam is passionate about the opportunities for Australian industry to be part of the global battery value chain and works to connect them locally and globally.

Dr Shirley Meng received her Ph.D. in Advance Materials for Micro & Nano Systems from the Singapore-MIT Alliance in 2005, after which she worked as a postdoc research fellow and became a research scientist at MIT. Shirley currently holds the Zable Endowed Chair Professor in Energy Technologies and is Professor of NanoEngineering and Materials Science, University of California San Diego (UCSD). She is the founding Director of Sustainable Power and Energy Center (). Shirley received the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award in 2011, UCSD Chancellor’s Interdisciplinary Collaboratories Award in 2013, Science Award in Electrochemistry by BASF and Volkswagen in 2014, C.W. Tobias Young Investigator Award of the Electrochemical Society (2016), IUMRS-Singapore Young Scientist Research Award (2017),International Coalition for Energy Storage and Innovation (ICESI) Inaugural Young Career Award (2018), American Chemical Society ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces Young Investigator Award (2018) and Finalist for the Blavatnik National Award (2018). Her research group – Laboratory for Energy Storage and Conversion (LESC) – focuses on functional nano and micro-scale materials for energy storage and conversion. The more recent programs include the design, synthesis, processing, and operando characterization of energy storage materials in advanced rechargeable batteries; new intercalation materials for sodium ion batteries; and advanced flow batteries for grids large scale storage. Shirley is the author and co-author of more than 160 peer-reviewed journal articles, 1 book chapter and 6 patents. She serves on the executive committee for battery division at the Electrochemical Society and she is the technical Editor for Journal of Power Sources.
Dr Rosalind Gummow

Rosalind Gummow’s work has focussed on the fundamental understanding of the relationship between crystallographic structure and electrochemical properties of lithium transition metal oxides. This understanding underpins the intelligent design and optimization of energy materials, with practical application in devices like lithium-ion batteries. She has been involved in the development of lithium transition metal oxides for application as lithium-ion battery cathodes since the early 1990’s when rechargeable lithium-ion battery technology was first established. Examples of her work include: the first reported preparation of a quasi-spinel LT-LiCoO2, stabilization of the LiMn2O4 spinel framework by partial substitution of Mn cations with Li,Mn,Zn or Al, and the development of the Li4Ti5O12/Li1+xMn2-xO4 electrode couple while working with Argonne National Laboratory Distinguished Fellow Dr Michael Thackeray at the CSIR in South Africa. This work has resulted in 13 patents, several of which have been commercialized internationally. The stabilized spinel compounds form a significant part of the batteries that were used in first generation Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf vehicles.
Rosalind arrived in Australia in 2008 in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences where, together with Prof. Yinghe He, she continued her work on lithium-ion battery cathode development. Recent work has focussed on materials with the potential for a greater than one electron change per transition metal cation with cycling, leading to high capacity electrodes, the development of catalysts for oxygen and hydrogen evolution and multivalent ion battery systems. Rosalind has built new collaborations with scientists in Australia and has used both neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction to develop a new understanding of the complex energy storage systems.

Neeraj completed his Ph.D. at The University of Sydney then moved to the Bragg Institute at Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) for a post-doc. He is currently a Associate Professor at UNSW. He has been awarded a number of Australian research grants and awards including the 2019 NSW Premier’s Prizes for Young Scientist of the Year (Physical Sciences), Australian Synchrotron Research Award, Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) Rennie Memorial Award, NSW Young Tall Poppy Award and the UNSW Excellence Award for Early Career Research. Neeraj has over 130 publications and has been invited to present his work at over 25 conferences. Neeraj’s research interests are based on solid state chemistry, designing new materials and investigating their structure-property relationships. He loves to undertake in situ or operando experiments of materials inside full devices, especially batteries, in order to elucidate the structural subtleties that lead to superior performance parameters. Neeraj’s projects are typically highly collaborative working with colleagues from all over the world with a range of skillsets.
